Title: Growing and Changing

Grade Level: Second Grade

Subject: Life Science

Topic: Life Cycles

Performance Task- GRASPS

Goal- Students will construct an environment that includes the life cycle of a butterfly and a plant.  Students will be able to relate seasonal changes in an environment showing and describing the life cycles of living organisms.

Role- Your role is to design the new exhibits at the Vines Botanical Garden.  The new exhibits include a butterfly house that shows the life cycles of the butterfly and a green house that shows the life cycle of a plant.  Each team will use their science journals and books to help them make a plan/poster with a written description and picture of the life cycles of the butterfly and plants that will help guide and educate the visitors at the Vines Botanical Garden.

Audience-You will be reporting and showing your exhibit plans to Mr.Green who is over the exhibits at the Vines Botanical Garden.  Along with school Administrators, parents and other classes in second grade.

Situation- The Vines Botanical Garden is opening two new exhibits in the spring.  The first exhibit will be a butterfly house showing the life cycle of a butterfly from egg to butterfly.  The second exhibit will be an exhibit showing the plant life cycle from seed to plant and the various stages inbetween.  Our job is to design the new exhibits for the Vines Botanical Garden.  Mr. Green wants each exhibit to have a picture showing the life cylces stages along with education information for the guest to learn more about the life cycles.

Group 1 and 2 – these two groups will be in charge of desiging each a 3D labeled Butterfly house.  The students will draw and label the life cycle of the butterfly and where to arrange them in the exhibit.  The students will also provide educational information on the topic.  The students will do a rough draft plan first and submit to the teacher.  The teacher will look over and assess information before giving the students the approval to complete the final 3D exhibit.

Group 3 and 4- These two groups will be in charge of desiging 3D labeled Seed to Plant Exhibit.  The students will draw and label the life cycle for the plants and show how to arrange them in the exhibit according to their stage.  The students will also provide brief educational information on the topic.  The students will do a rough draft first and submit to the teacher.  The teacher will look over and assess information before giving the students the approval to complete the final 3D exhibit.

Product/Performance- The class will be divided into four groups.  Two groups will be designing the butterfly house and the other two groups will be desiging the Seed to Plant exhibit.  Each team will use their science journal and book to help in their creating of a 3D display and labeling of the life cycles along with the information needed for the exhibit.  The teacher will invite school administrators, Vines Botanical Garden supervisor over the exhibits, parents and other classes in second grade to tour the new exhibits.
