Performance Task – GRASPS (We will go over this as a class, because some of the words are new, and the directions can be hard to follow)

• Goal –You will learn about maps, globes, symbols, communities, and where you live. You will learn about all of this by reading, writing, talking, drawing, doing projects, and presentations. You will figure out where you live in the world.

• Role – You will make a map of the school. You will have to include symbols, directions (east, west, etc…), and geographic (you will learn the mean of this word) features.

• Audience – Each group will provide the other groups with a copy of their maps. The other groups will use the map provided to get to a certain place in the school which will be marked by a symbol. For example, if your group chose the flagpole you could put a star where the flagpole is in the school.

• Situation – All of the different groups are going to pretend they are giving a map to a new student. The new student needs to know where everything is. Once the groups trade maps, they will take on the role of new student. They will have to read the map made by the other group and figure out where it is telling them to go. You have to use your map skills to follow the directions to the location. Once you get to the location there will be a symbol there showing you have come to the right place. You will work in small groups. Each group will choose a location out of a hat and create a map to this location. Remember, the map is for a new student, so it needs to be detailed. You will spend time creating a good map, using different materials.

• Product/Performance – You will create a map of the school that uses the directions, and features we discuss. It will be given to another group of students, and they must use it to find the location you have shown them to. You will be graded on how well you work as a group, and your final product.
