Performance Task- GRASPS

Grade Level 3

Subject: Math

Topic: Geometry

Created By: Darcy Schrimpf-Mahler

Performance Task: GRASPS

Goal: You will create an informational book that will teach other first graders all about geometric 2-D shapes!

Role: You are an author of a famous book series of first grade writing. It is your job to make sure you make things clear, neat and understanding, so your work can be easily understood.

Audience: As a famous author, your audience consists of very intelligent, eager, first grade students that want to learn all about the fascinating subject of geometry.

Situation: A first grader does not know anything about geometry. Circles and squares look familiar but is there information to actually know about them? Operation, teach all about these cool things called shapes!

Product/Performance: You will create a booklet with images of all the 2 and 3-D shapes we’ve studied. Accompanying those shapes are the names and information about those shapes; this information will later help in grouping the shapes according to features they share.

Standard/Criteria for Success: Use of rubric. **This project will take place at the END of the geometry unit and all of the students should be able to perform this assessment task easily and fluently.**

Please be sure to include the following shapes:  circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond, sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, triangular prism, and cone.

For EVERY shape, include the number of faces, corners, and edges!

Let’s make sure our information is correct!

All facts in the brochure were correct. You showed complete understanding of the geometric shapes and their characteristics.

Most of the facts in the brochure were correct. You showed strong understanding of the geometric shapes and their characteristics.

Some of the facts in the brochure were correct. You showed some understanding of the geometric shapes and their characteristics.

Few of the facts in the brochure were correct. You showed little to no understanding of the geometric shapes and their characteristics.

Let’s take a look at our hand-drawn pictures!

Your drawing, correctly and neatly, showed the shape.

Your drawing looked a lot like the shape and you tried to be neat.

Your drawing showed some parts of the shape and the picture showed you put some work into the project.

Your drawing did not show the  shape and there appeared to be very little work put into the project.

Let’s show off what we know!

You correctly labeled the name of each shape to accompany its picture. This was done neatly, and it was easy to read.

You correctly labeled most of the names of the shapes to accompany their pictures. This was done fairly neatly, and was pretty easy to read.

You labeled some of the shapes correctly, with their pictures. This was done with some effort and most was correct.

You did not label the shapes correctly. This work was not done with effort/ OR not done at all.

Let’s check out our writing skills!

Each page had a completed section with the shapes' information: number or corners, edges, faces. This was done neatly and correctly.

Each page had a section mostly complete, with the shapes' information: number of corners, edges, and faces. This was done fairly correctly and neatly.

Each page had a section with some of the shapes' information: number of corners, edges, and faces. This work showed some effort and knowledge.

Pages did not have sections with accurate information about the shape. This work showed little to no work at all.
