Performance Task (GRASPS)
Kindergarten - U. S. Symbols

Submitted by: K. Nagell

Goal – You will tell other children about our American symbols and their meanings.

Role – You will be a tour guide.  You will tell a group of children about the important places and symbols in America.

Audience – A Kindergarten class from England will be visiting our country.  You will take them on a tour.  They speak English, but have never been to America before.

Situation – You and your classmates are acting as tour guides in Washington D.C. this summer.  Because you are American Kindergarteners, you will be showing Kindergarten classes from other countries around the city.  You will need to tell them about the places they are seeing and why they are important symbols in America.  You will be working in three groups.  Each group will present their part of the tour to the group.

Liberty Group: You will welcome the tour group.  They arrived in America in New York and saw the Statue of Liberty.  Talk to them about the meaning of the Statue.  You will also tell them about the Bald Eagle as our country’s symbol.

Stars and Stripes Group:  You will show the group the American flag and tell them about its meaning.  You will perform the Pledge of Allegiance for them.  Then you will take them to the Smithsonian Museum’s exhibit on the Star Spangled Banner, show them the flag and sing along to the Star-Spangled Banner for them.

Presidential Group: You will take the group to the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and Washington Monument.  You will talk about our current president and these famous presidents of our country.

Product/Performance – You will talk and sing about the places and symbols of your country (depending which group you are in), so that the visiting Kindergarteners will know about our American symbols.

·         Each of you will have to talk to the tour group for part of the presentation.  Make sure you speak loudly, look at your audience, and smile!

·         Your group will need to say 3 things about each symbol.

·         Each group will create 1 or more pictures, posters, or props for the presentation that are neat, colorful, and accurate.

·         You will each contribute to the group’s presentation and work together nicely as a group.
