Performance Task - GRASPS

Goal – The goal of this fun activity is for you to learn how to tell time and understand how time is apart of our lives. You will gain a sense of time awareness of the order and length of different events.  You will learn how to create a schedule with a beginning, middle, and end sequence.

Role – Your role in this activity will be to become a birthday party coordinator for yourself for the day. Your job is to make a fabulous birthday agenda for yourself that no one will want to miss. You will put together a birthday schedule with a list of activities and coordinating times in a personalized book.

Audience – Your audience will be your family and friends, who will be apart of celebrating your special day. They will use the birthday schedule book to know the order of events on your birthday and how to best honor you on your day.

Situation – It is that wonderful time of year again, your birthday! It is important you understand the time of year for your birthday. You will need to decide what day in the month your birthday falls on and what you would like to do to celebrate your special day. Think about your birthday from the moment you wake up, to the time you lay your head down on your pillow that night. Explore and dream up what fun things you want to do on your birthday and make sure the order of events make sense. Would you like to wake up to breakfast in bed, get a hair cut, get your nails done (if you’re a girl), shop for a new outfit, have a big party, set up decorations, greet and spend time with party guests, play games, open presents, ride your bike in the park, enjoy a family movie night, take a bubble bath, read a new bedtime story.  Your task is to make a creative list of activities and their time of day in order from beginning to end. When you’re done with your list, you’ll make an illustrative “My Birthday Celebration Schedule Book.” It will highlight your fantastic activities in a fun manner. Get excited, it is time to prepare for your celebration!

Product/Performance – The final product of this activity will be for you to have made a “My Celebration Birthday Book,” highlighting all the key events of your special day in sequence from the beginning, middle, and end of the day. You will need to include a minimum of 5 activities in your birthday book. You are welcome to do more than 5 activities. This will include illustrating a detailed and creative image of each birthday activity on each page. You will need to write a short description of what you are doing in the picture. The correctly written time and length of the activity on your birthday should also be reflected. All of your work needs to be completed in an organized manner and should be written with your best handwriting. You will have an opportunity to practice sharing your special birthday books with partners. Please practice using good eye contact, reading your activities and time fluently, and speaking with a strong volume. Overall, you will want to present your book in a confident and clear manner. Then, you will have the chance to showcase your creative and detailed work with the entire class during an exciting and festive “Around the Clock” themed culminating telling time party.
