            Performance Task – GRASPS

Goal -  You will be able to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by finding the least common multiple.                            You will be able to out your answer in simplest form by finding the greatest common factor.

Role -  You will be a fraction detective.  You will write down the steps necessary for fraction addition and subtraction                            as well as practicing these skills for your very important case

Audience -  You will be reporting your results to the fraction police, who will  then determine if a crime has been committed.

Situation -  You have been offered by another 5th grader to trade some items. The items you the other student wants from you are:  1/3rd of your lunch, 2/5ths of your books, and 5/8ths of your pens.  In exchange you will receive:  2/6ths of their lunch, 1/7th of their pencils, and 3/4ths of their bubble gum.  You must figure out whether the trade you are making is a fair one.  To do so you must be able to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and then put these fractions in simplest form.  To complete this task you must decide if what you are trading is equal (ie. equivalent fractions).

Product Performance -  On a poster you will show the items that have been offered as a trade to you (2/6ths of a  lunch, 1/7th of pens, and 3/4ths of bubble gum).  You will then show the addition of these items  which will have unlike denominators and put your answer in simplest form.  Next you will show the items you are offering in return (1/3rd of  your lunch, 2/5ths of your books, and 5/8ths of your pens), add these fractions, and put the answer in simplest form. Then you will write an informational paragraph explaining why this exchange is or is not a fair deal.
