Goal – You will plan a catering planner for a group function and divide your foods to give each person equal portions.

Role – You will be a party planner.  You will be hired to plan an event and must figure out how to divide foods so that each person gets an equal share.

Audience – You will be presenting your food to a group of students for their after school party.

Situation – The second grade (20 students) is having an after school party for their good behavior and you have been hired to plan the food for the party.  You will be given a list of what we have for our party.  We want everyone to have equal shares of food.  Your job is to decide how we should cut the pizzas, cake, and apples so that everyone has the same amount.

Product/Performance – Using a paper plate, draw and write the fraction of each type of food each student will get.  Basically, you will be making an example of what each person will get to eat, making sure to show the fraction of the entire food.  Also, draw how you will divide the whole cake(s), pizza(s), and apples.

Group 1 – You must divide 1 cake, 10 apples, and 5 pizzas

Group 2 – You must divide 2 cakes, 5 apples, and 4 pizzas

Group 3 – You must divide 4 cakes, 4 apples, and 2 pizzas

Make sure we aren’t wasting any food – no leftovers!  You will then be presenting your group’s work to the class to vote on which “plate” we would like to have at our party.
