Performance Task – GRASPS

Goal – You will learn how to identify, model, label, and compare fractions as a representation of a whole. You will learn that these parts are equal to a whole.

Role – You work for a jigsaw puzzle making company.

Audience – The marketing department of Piece by Piece Puzzles is contacting you to develop a product line of puzzles. These puzzles are to be mathematically educational with being “fraction” specific.  They hope to sell these puzzles as soon as possible.

Situation – The marketing department has decided to become partners in education to develop puzzles for elementary schools.  They have assigned all the people in your department with the following fractions: thirds, sixths, eighths, and tenths.  Your job is to create a fraction jigsaw puzzle for Piece by Piece Puzzles based on your assigned fraction.  You will be grouped with your colleagues to expedite this project.

Product/Performance – You will be given a template for each fraction: third, sixth, eighth, and tenth.  You will create a design for your picture on each piece of paper.  That picture will be photocopied.  You will then cut this picture into the fractional pieces shown on the template.  The other copy will be folded into the envelope provided.  It will be up to you to be creative in design.
