Performance Task-GRASPS

Goal:

You will explore the (geographical) location of the seven continents of the earth by creating a printable map. You will learn that each continent is different in shape and size. You will explore the (geographical) similarities of each continent and the super continent Pangaea. Students will develop an understanding of the use of maps for geographical representation.

 

Role

You are going to be a travel agent for a close friend or family member. You will learn the location of each continent and ocean on a map/globe. Based on what you learned you will create a printable map using and a travel brochure that describes your favorite continent and ocean to go along with your map. You will want to include fun and interesting facts to teacher your friend or family member about the continents and oceans you have learned about. Your goal is to help your friend decide where to visit. After you have completed this assignment you will mail your maps and brochures to your friends/family member.

 

Audience

Students will share their maps and what they have learned as a group. The maps and brochures will be mailed to your friend or family member. The teacher will observe your presentation and assess your accuracy on learned facts.

 

Situation

You’ve just received a letter from your favorite friend or family member who can’t decide where to go on their next vacation. They have thought about visiting one of the seven continents or even taking a sailing trip on the ocean. They need you to help them decide where to go. Because maps and globes are used to represent the location of water and land forms you will be creating a map of the world for your friend. To help them make the decision you will be making a brochure filled with facts and fun information about your favorite continent and ocean. Each student will share their map and brochure with the class and then mail it to their friend or family member.

 

Product/Performance

You will create a brochure to teach your friend and family member about your continent and ocean in order to help them decide where to go on their next vacation. First you will choose the continent and ocean you will be writing about. Using construction paper you will fold your paper to create a brochure or little book.  In the brochure, you will include important information that will teach your friend/family member about that place.  You should include information about the name, shape, location, temperature, and climate.  You will also need to include a picture of an animal that lives on that continent and ocean. Finally, you will list what you like best about the continent and ocean.
