Defending My Rights -- Performance Task

Goal

Your goal is to defend your rights, and those of your group, in a speech given to a mixed audience of supporters and their opposition.

Role

You have been transported back in time to the period between 1957 and 1976.  You are a minority in America campaigning for equal rights.  You are the leader of your reform group.

Audience

A national press conference has formed and the community in which you live is also in attendance.

Situation

Fed up with the injustice, you (and others like you) have rallied peacefully all week long in front of City Hall.  The numbers of those supporting you have grown so large that the mayor and the rest of the city can no longer ignore you.  They have given in to your demands to be heard.

Product

You will write and present a speech defending your rights as an American citizen.  Since you have gone back in time, you are expected to fully become your character by dressing in the appropriate attire for the time period and using any relevant props to make it “real.” The speech will represent you and other minorities like you.  In your speech, you will mention key people, who’ve helped you, and events that support your plea for equality.  Because you are campaigning for equal rights and this press conference is nationally televised, it could mean the difference between your reform group actually initiating change or a continued life of disguised injustice.
